EW a few days ago, during one of the most watched press conferences in the history of Afghanistan, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid stated that the war was over. Other Taliban leaders such as Anas Haqqani echo the same thing on their Twitter account. Indeed, the war which began about 20 years ago with a US invasion was over.
The question is, does that mean the peace of utopian now? Well, not exactly. Blurrier images than most people think.
The collapse of the Ashraf Ghani regime and his security forces is not something unexpected. Every serious expert and everyone who is aware of us and NATO officials understand well that the regime and his troops will collapse finally after US military withdrawals and NATO.
Estimates of destruction predicted to range from several months to one or two years. What is not expected at all is that this collapse can occur in a matter of several days. That was what was meant by several US officials that there was an intelligence failure.
Failure is really about the level of benefits of doubts given to the regime and its troops. Because later it turned out, the regime collapsed at the first sight of the Taliban at Gates Kota Kabul.
