In the Pacific, Japan believes and has captured Singapore, Malaya and the Philippines. In Europe, Nazis controls most continents. And in Africa, the first Alamin battle ended with German General Rommel after chasing the eighth British army who resigned across the Egyptian border.

Winston Churchill described this period as follows in its history of World War II: “The battle swayed alternating until the end of the month, when both sides struggled to traffic … I was politically in the weakest and without a luster of military success.”

Ukrania President Volodymyr Zelenskyy may be forgiven for having such melancholy feelings this week.

While large -scale missiles attacking during the weekend very painful, many of his attention will remain in East Ukraine.Since the end of April, Russia has focused most of their combat forces, including land forces, artillery and air power, in the arrest of the Donbas region. This is a campaign that is fought for in the eastern front of Ukraine. And while the historical analogy is always full of danger, what we have witnessed is not the deadlock of World War I, or the first Gulf War maneuver.

Instead, it has resembled battles around the city of Caen France in the midst of the normanding landing. British and Canadian troops drove through the position of Germany which were fought over on weeks after D-Day.

Likewise, we see the slugfest in the land in East Ukraine. The brave Ukraine, struggled against a larger Russian troops with significant benefits in the artillery and air power, slowly giving land in Luhanansk’s pocket.

Centered in the city of Sievierodonetsk, Ukraine defenders have fought Russia and used it as much as possible.

Russia, using the great power of mercenary army and proxy forces, only managed to advance in one digit kilometer every week.

We may never know how much Russia and Ukraine are killed in action or injured. But, considering the number of Ukraine victims killed 100-200 per day, we must expect it in thousands.

Ukraine High Command, while his army fought and died in the East, had to make a difficult decision about the defense from Sievierodonetsk. There is a significant political pressure to remain in the city. At the same time, Ukraine needed their troops to stay long enough to cause sufficient damage to Russia’s first echelon and reserves.

During this time, Ukraine will have the worst plan to finally submit land to preserve their combat forces. This is a very complicated balancing action at the tactical, operational and strategic levels. This demands superior decision making and courage from senior leaders. This can be very wrong for the power to defense if the decision to attract is too late.

This week, the Ukraine High Command made the decision to withdraw its troops from Sievierodonetsk to the Defensive position which was previously further west. Ceding ground in the east by Ukraine is tactical rearrangement.

This is not the same as “‘Ukraine lost war”, because some have given events in the last few weeks. That is only a part of the nature of war, because humans try to impose their will to each other. War has many bends and turns.

While Ukraine has fought in the south, east and northern Kharkiv, they have also rebuilt their logistics system around the NATO model, and re -surrender with long -distance fires. This will hold them well for battle in front. But this is a continuous challenge.
